Pedro Coutinho – founder and managing director of WATERDOG
Pedro and his team at WATERDOG are responsible for developing the HATCH web portal. Pedro has a wide range of experience in both the space and IT sector, which makes him a perfect manager for the development team. He can see and understand both sides of the coin – user needs and technical possibilities.
After working for several years with satellite navigation, Pedro shifted to web and mobile development. This combination of expertise has been perfect for introducing new web technologies in the space sector.
What is exciting for you about the space sector?
Personally, I have always been amazed by satellite navigation systems. The huge complexity of the system operation and all the disciplines needed to compute someone’s location on our planet are some of the facts that made me pursue work in this area. The resilience of space engineers is also amazing, since they sometimes spend years of their life working on the same specific subject with the uncertainty of one day achieving what has been pursued.
What do you like the most about the space sector?
The human capability to achieve what many people believe to be impossible.
Your first memory of HATCH…
I felt that the task of developing the space portal wouldn’t be easy but that our consortium was the right one for the task. From the beginning there was a very good vibe among the companies involved and I felt our capabilities were ideal.
What are your favourite HATCH features so far?
I really like the concept of networks, the powerful functionality for space professionals and the Quick Knowledge articles – very interesting for everyone.
What are the main advantages of HATCH for stakeholders?
Information about the European space industry and research is very scattered nowadays and often not easy to find. Having a one stop shop for space research and innovation will surely be very useful for space professionals, whether they represent funding bodies, research institutions or private companies.
The most exciting part of the project
From a technical point of view, the HATCH platform comprises big data that will require very powerful and fast search algorithms. The user experience has to be excellent in order to keep users engaged and hence successfully fulfil the usage expectations.
What do you think about the HATCH consortium?
The consortium has all the knowledge and expertise to make HATCH a success. From software development to communication and marketing, the consortium has different skill sets that, together with a strong knowledge of the European space industry, maximize the future sustainability of HATCH.
