Catena Space – HATCH consortium partner from the United Kingdom

Updated: Sep 4, 2018

Catena Space was founded in 2014 in the United Kingdom in response to opportunities arising in the space industry within the UK and Europe. The founders gathered specialists from academia, business management, technology development, and space systems engineering to provide a range of services for the space sector.

Catena Space operates an agile business model allowing a quick response to deliver on a variety of projects, with a focus on three priorities: training and skills development, strategic project support and technology development.

Catena has a mission to make the UK space sector work better by filling skills gaps, maintaining knowledge through hands-on technology development and engaging the public through accessible knowledge sharing.

The company and its team have experience both managing and participating in funded projects. Ed Chester, who is the director of Catena Space, has broad international experience, thanks to which he is in contact with a diverse network of companies and their representatives. This has allowed him to see the opportunity of the HATCH project and begin realising it together with specialists in his field.

Challenges

We are a small, creative company with many ideas, and our biggest challenge is in finding the time and resources to carry out these ideas. The other challenge is being a new company in an established sector, traditionally made up of large companies. There is a growing core of small, agile companies and so the balance is shifting with the growth of downstream applications and more commercial requirements – fitting in or finding a place in this shifting landscape is also a challenge.

HATCH is a big project and we have set ambitious targets. The challenge here is to manage the scope of the work whilst delivering a tool that will become invaluable to anyone interested in space – in a personal or professional capacity. There is a lot of potential data to be included in HATCH, but in some cases it is hard to locate the source and format in order for it to be included in the portal.

Communication between partners could have been a challenge but, in fact, has proved not to be, and there is a great team spirit between all the partners.

Skills

Catena Space is a company made up of professionals with knowledge and experience as well as creative minds that never cease to amaze with their broad vision. This team pays special attention to nuances. Its core skills are developing practical training; project and programme management; communication (making technical knowledge accessible); systems engineering; and propulsion, launch, and mission operations. This is already a wide spectrum of knowledge, yet the team knows a lot about many other things besides.
